Vern was involved in the sport of curling for over forty-five years prior to his passing on January 22, 2012. He was happiest when busy working on a committee or officiating at a curling event. It was while driving home to Saskatoon after officiating the Northern Men’s Playdowns in Nipawin that he died of a heart attack.
Vern enjoyed being active in the sport and spent countless hours serving on Saskatoon and Saskatchewan Curling committees and volunteering at major and local curling events. He served in numerous positions including President of the Granite Curling Club, Saskatchewan Curling Association (SCA) Region 13 Director 1989-2004, SCA 2nd Vice President 2004-2005, SCA 1st Vice President 2005-2006, SCA President 2006-2007, SCA Past President 2007-2008, Co-Chair of the 2009 Canadian Masters Championships in Saskatoon, Curl Saskatoon liaison to the 2012 Tim Hortons Brier Committee, Executive Director of the 2012 Brier Committee and Vice President of Curl Saskatoon 2011 until his passing.
“The game of curling is better because of Vern’s involvement and he will be missed.”
